Over 3,000 years ago, Mount Hakone’s eruption created a large volcanic crater, leading to the formation of Lake Ashi (Ashi-no-ko) in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. This stunning work of nature has become iconic thanks to its breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. On clear days visitors can see the unmistakable mountain rising above the trees and, occasionally, witness its reflection in the still waters. Surrounding Lake Ashi is a relatively undeveloped coast of lush woods and quaint onsen towns.
Nestled in the forests encircling Lake Ashi are notable destinations such as Hakone Shrine, the Hakone Detached Palace Garden, and Moto-Hakone. Hakone Shrine, located on the southern end of the lake, is situated just off the shore with its red torii gate seemingly floating in the water and its similarly vibrant shrine buildings standing sheltered in the trees. Also located on the southern shores, is the Hakone Detached Palace Garden, a remnant of the summer palace for the Japanese Imperial Family. The garden, called Onshi Hakone Park, has scenic walking trails and some of the area’s best views of Mount Fuji. Nearby the garden is Moto-Hakone, which is one of the towns where boat tours often depart. Apart from the town’s port activity, Moto-Hakone is regarded as another prime location to observe Mount Fuji.
Hakone Sightseeing Boats and Izuhakone Sightseeing Boats operate boat tours on the visually intriguing lake. Hakone Sightseeing Boats is especially appealing to visitors as it offers 30 minute tours via pirate ships, which truly capture the adventurous spirit of exploration! While on Lake Ashi, visitors are treated to one of Hakone’s best views of Mount Fuji. For a more physically immersive experience, visitors can also rent swan-shaped paddle boats!

Owakudani, littéralement la "grande vallée bouillante", est une vallée volcanique avec d'innombrables sources chaudes qui est située près de Hakone dans la préfecture de Kanagawa. Créée il y a environ 3000 ans, la vallée du cratère est aujourd'hui un site touristique populaire, malgré son nom inquiétan. La vallée volcanique est toujours active aujourd'hui, avec des évents de soufre et ses sources chaudes. On l'appelait autrefois "Grand Inferno" ou "Grand Enfer" en raison des flots de fumée sulfurique blanche qui montaient dans le ciel. De plus, la forte teneur en soufre provoque l’absence de plantes et donne au paysage cet aspect stérile. En 1873, lorsque le couple impérial Meiji a visité Hakone, le volcan a été renommé car les habitants étaient réticents à les inviter dans un endroit avec un nom d'aussi mauvaise augure. La vallée est accessible via un téléphérique ainsi que plusieurs sentiers de randonnée, ces derniers étant cependant partiellement fermés en raison de l'activité volcanique dans la vallée. Le téléphérique le même ne n’opère pas lorsque trop de gaz volcanique s’échappe. Les « œufs noirs » sont une spécialité particulière à Owakudani. Les œufs de poule sont cuits dans les sources chaudes sulfureuses et deviennent noirs lors du processus de cuisson. Mais ne vous inquiétez-pas ils peuvent être consommés sans danger. On dit même que manger ces œufs ajoute 7 années de vie supplémentaires.
