La construction du fameux torii rouge debout dans l'eau à marée haute est liée à la croyance en la pureté. Dans le passé, les pèlerins n'étaient autorisés à s'approcher de l'île qu'en bateau à travers ce torii, de sorte que le sanctuaire flottant lui-même fonctionnait comme un port purificateur et le seul accès à l'île sainte.
