寿福寺は鎌倉幕府に縁故ある寺である。ここは源頼朝の父、義朝が屋敷を構えていた土地であり、頼朝も拠点にしようと考えていた場所であった。そして頼朝の死の翌年、1200（正治元）年には、北条政子が開基となって、寿福寺を建立した。その政子と三代将軍実朝の墓は、境内奥のやぐら（岩を穿って造った横穴式墓地）に収められている。裏山には源氏山公園を経て、北鎌倉や大仏に続く山道があり、現在はハイキングコースとして整備されている。町中を通らずに要所に通じるこの道を、鎌倉武士が頻用していたことは想像に難くない。
