You may have heard of the Tour de France, but have you heard of the Tour de Tsumari?
Taking place at the end of August, this much-loved cycling event in Niigata Prefecture celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026, inviting participants to pedal through the spectacular rural landscapes of Tokamachi City and Tsunan Town. Unlike traditional cycling races, Tour de Tsumari isn't about crossing the finish line first. Instead, it's about slowing down, taking in the scenery, and connecting with local communities.
Held in the heart of the Echigo-Tsumari region, the route winds through some of Japan's most picturesque satoyama landscapes, with golden rice fields, terraced paddies, rolling hills, and quiet villages providing a stunning backdrop. As summer draws to a close, the countryside is at its most colorful, making it one of the most scenic rides in Japan.
One of the event's defining features is the warm welcome riders receive along the way. Residents line parts of the course to cheer on participants, transforming the ride into a shared celebration between cyclists and the local community. Organizers say this sense of connection has been at the heart of Tour de Tsumari since it first began in 2006.
To mark the milestone anniversary, participants will receive a newly designed commemorative jersey, replacing the event's traditional bright yellow with an elegant black design created by long-time designer Toru Tatezawa.
