Samsung's New Suica Plan for Japan Travelers

Getting around may soon become a lot smoother

If you're planning a trip to Japan in the next couple of years, getting around may soon become a lot smoother if you're a Samsung user.

A new collaboration between Samsung Electronics Japan and East Japan Railway Company is set to expand the reach of Japan's popular Suica transport system for inbound travelers. From the first half of 2027, selected overseas versions of Samsung Galaxy smartphones will support the "Welcome Suica Mobile" app, allowing visitors to access trains, buses, and even everyday shopping without needing a physical card.

For anyone unfamiliar, Suica is one of Japan's essential travel tools. Traditionally issued as a prepaid IC card, it lets you tap in and out of train stations, hop on buses, and pay at convenience stores and vending machines. The new mobile version aims to reduce the need for in-person setup by letting travelers manage everything directly on their phones.

What makes this update particularly useful is the potential to streamline the arrival experience. Rather than relying solely on airport counters or ticket machines, eligible travelers may be able to issue and charge a Suica card digitally. Integration with Samsung's payment platform will also allow users to top up their balance and purchase add-ons like Green Car tickets directly within the app.

There are a few limitations to keep in mind. Welcome Suica is designed specifically for short-term visitors, meaning balances cannot be refunded and will expire after a set period. Device compatibility will also depend on specific models released outside Japan from 2027 onward.

Still, for inbound travelers, this signals a clear shift toward more seamless, app-based travel in Japan.
