Yamadera est un complexe de temples au sommet d'une montagne au nord-est de la ville de Yamagata dans la préfecture du même nom. Son nom officiel est Risshakuji, mais il est largement connu sous le nom de Yamadera (littéralement le «temple de la montagne») car il s'étend sur plusieurs niveaux jusqu'à une montagne escarpée. Le temple a été désigné à la fois comme lieu national de beauté pittoresque et site historique national.
Le temple a été construit en 860 par le prêtre Ennin et appartenait à l'époque à la secte Tennai. Il a été agrandi pendant le shogunat de Kamakura avant d'être détruit après un incendie au XIIIe siècle, puis reconstruit et transformé en temple zen.
Le parc du temple commence au pied de la montagne et monte sur plus de 1000 marches et plusieurs niveaux. L'emplacement inhabituel sur les pentes parfois escarpées des montagnes ainsi que l'enracinement dans la nature environnante ont inspiré l’un des poèmes de haïku les plus célèbres du poète Matsuo Basho. Il y a aussi un musée qui lui est dédié près du temple, dans lequel on peut admirer ses œuvres.

Yamadera is served by its own self-named train station, which is located on the JR Senzan line that connects Yamagata City and Sendai.
