Le mont Aso, dans la préfecture de Kumamoto, sur l'île principale de Kyushu, est le plus grand volcan actif du Japon et l'un des plus grands du monde. Il fait partie du parc national Aso-Kuju et son sommet le plus haut culmine à une hauteur de 1592 mètres au-dessus du niveau de la mer, offrant une vue impressionnante sur la montagne depuis la ville d'Aso
Sa caldeira mesure 25 km à son point le plus large et s'est probablement formée à la suite de plusieurs "super éruptions". On y trouve 15 cratères volcaniques, dont les 5 plus hauts sont appelés les "5 montagnes d'Aso": Taka-dake (1592 mètres), Naka-dake (1506 mètres), Neko-dake (1433 mètres), Kishima-dake (1362 mètres) et Eboshi-dake (1337 mètres).
Le seul cratère encore actif est le Naka-dake, également l'un des volcans les plus actifs du Japon. Au bord du cratère, se trouvent des places de parking ainsi qu’un musée, tous deux toujours accessibles en bus et en voiture. Le téléphérique, lui, n'est plus en service en raison de la forte activité volcanique.
Les dernières éruptions du cratère Naka-dake ont eu lieu en 2015 et 2016, mais la région et l’impression cône volcanique demeurent l'une des attractions les plus populaires de Kyushu.
