Staying hydrated is one of the most important ways to beat Japan's intense summer heat, and it's not just people who need extra care. Animals can also be affected by soaring temperatures, which is why Osaka's Harvest Hill is giving some of its most popular residents a refreshing seasonal treat.
On August 1 and August 15, Harvest Hill in Sakai City will host its limited-time "Capybara & Goat Watermelon Party," where visitors can watch capybaras and goats enjoy juicy watermelon as part of the park's summer heatstroke prevention efforts.
With its high water content, watermelon is a great way to help keep the animals hydrated during the hottest part of the year. The event offers a chance to see the capybaras enthusiastically munch through entire watermelons, rind and all, thanks to their impressively strong teeth. It's a surprising sight for many visitors and one that's guaranteed to draw plenty of smiles.
The goats will also be treated to watermelon during special feeding sessions held at three different locations within Animal Friend Park, giving guests multiple opportunities to watch them tuck into the refreshing snack.
The goat watermelon feeding begins at 12 p.m. and runs for around 30 minutes, while the capybara session starts at 1 p.m. and lasts approximately 15 minutes. The event takes place in the Village Area at Harvest Hill and is included with standard park admission, although the watermelon treats are available only while supplies last. Please note that the event will be cancelled in the event of rain.
