ハナカイドウの桃色に彩られる4月中旬の妙本寺は、玲瓏たる幽谷の世界だ。JR鎌倉駅から歩いて10分という距離にありながら、ここには人里離れた古刹の趣がある。1203（建仁3）年、鎌倉幕府の二代将軍、源頼家の罹病をきっかけに、有力御家人の比企氏と北条氏の間に争いが起きた。政争に敗れた比企氏の頭領、比企能員は殺害され、一族は邸に火を放って自害した。1260（文応元）年、一人生き残った能員の子が、旧邸跡を日蓮宗に献呈し、一族の菩提を弔うために建てた堂宇が妙本寺の元となった。
