Enjoy this spot from a different perspective

Summer is a fantastic time to explore Japan's waterfalls, and visitors to Iwate Prefecture can experience one from an entirely different perspective at the Kinshuko Great Waterfall in Nishiwaga Town. During the seasonal opening, visitors have the rare opportunity to walk behind the cascading water by passing through the interior of the dam that feeds it.

By day, the attraction offers an immersive experience where cool mist, thundering water, and refreshing temperatures provide a welcome escape from Japan's summer heat. The unusual viewpoint from behind the falls makes it one of Nishiwaga's standout natural attractions, particularly for travelers looking to venture beyond the country's better-known destinations.

As evening falls, the experience transforms completely. The Kinshuko Great Waterfall, recognized as Japan's first dam facility to be designated a Japanese Night View Heritage Site, is illuminated with colorful LED lighting, creating a magical display against the rushing water. Alongside its signature rainbow illumination, the waterfall also features a selection of seasonal color displays throughout the event period, offering returning visitors a different spectacle to enjoy.

The surrounding area also embraces the summer season with festivals celebrating local food, craft beer, and forest culture, while the Kinshuko Great Waterfall Summer Light Festival adds family-friendly activities such as fishing and stand-up paddleboarding during the day before the illuminated falls become the evening's main attraction.
