Japan is home to a host of unique and fascinating festivals, from centuries-old religious celebrations to quirky local events. Among them is the Hokkai Belly Button Festival, a lighthearted summer tradition held each year on July 28th and 29th in Furano, Hokkaido.

The festival takes its unusual name from Furano's location at the geographical center of Hokkaido, often referred to as the "navel" of the island. Embracing this identity, participants paint colorful faces on their bellies and perform lively dances while concealing their real faces beneath oversized hats. The playful performances, known as "belly button dances," create a cheerful and humorous atmosphere that draws plenty of laughter from spectators.

As one of Hokkaido's most representative summer festivals, the event attracts visitors not only from across Japan but also from overseas. Over the two-day celebration, Furano comes alive with music, dance performances, and community activities organized by local residents. Festivalgoers can also explore the "Navel Specialty Market," where stalls offer a variety of delicious foods made with fresh local ingredients, showcasing the region's rich agricultural produce.
