One of Japan's most celebrated art forms is getting a spectacular high-tech makeover this summer as the Ukiyo-e Immersive Art Exhibition makes its Tohoku debut in Aomori.
Running from July 11th to August 30th, the limited-time exhibition transforms more than 300 iconic ukiyo-e masterpieces into a fully immersive digital experience using 3DCG animation and projection mapping. Rather than viewing framed prints on a gallery wall, visitors can walk through vibrant, floor-to-ceiling projections that bring the artwork to life in nine themed exhibition spaces.
The exhibition features works inspired by legendary ukiyo-e masters including Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Kitagawa Utamaro, Toshusai Sharaku and Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Alongside the stunning visuals, visitors can also learn more about everyday life, entertainment and culture during Japan's Edo period through easy-to-understand displays.
What makes the Aomori edition especially unique is its exclusive content celebrating the region's connection to ukiyo-e. Special installations explore landscapes depicting Aomori and the artistic links between traditional ukiyo-e and the famous Nebuta Festival, offering a perspective that can't be experienced at other venues.
Opening day includes a special Night Museum event, with extended evening hours allowing guests to experience the glowing digital artworks after dark. A curated gift shop produced by Hirosaki's popular Tsugaru craft store Kusamura will also be open throughout the exhibition, selling exhibition-exclusive merchandise alongside locally made Aomori crafts and souvenirs.
